That seems to be the mentality of people these days on the internet. If it lacks an emoticon, it's automatically seen as rude or sarcastic. Why?

Why? Not only language is not a perfect communication tool, but it is also the most miserable one... Symbolic languages which include graphics will be the next generation of language. What you see here as "emoticons" is only the transition! Why do you think people liked them so much when they became available - because they could easily express themselves...
